Summary

Investigation of a small area of subsidence revealed a narrow conduit with a brick-lined bottom, stone sides and capped with stone tiles. The date of this feature is not known, but the brick-lined base suggests that it is most likely to be post-medieval..

Full Description

'Park Walk. Shaftesbury. Gd ref ST 8611222827. 8/5/77. Due to subsidence in the Tarmac, a small area was removed to reveal a water-course running 160 degrees (magnetic) 17cm in width, 18cm in depth. The base was of brick, consisting of three bricks across with edge uppermost, the two external bricks sloped inward approximately 40 degrees (Brick: deep red 75mm thick, 227mm in length). The sides of the water course was of greensand and was capped with stone tiles. Position of investigation 6 metres South (160 degrees) from S/W corner of Abbey House wall (junction of Park Walk and Abbey Walk) then 12.5m east.' (1)
