Full Description
From a barrow at Dewlish came a cup curiously slashed with vertical openings. It has two rows of twenty three incisions each. An incense cup. <1>
The incense cup (so called) illustrated on the Title Page (now in the Dorset Co. Museum Acc.No. 1885 16.40) was taken from a large tumulus removed for agricultural purposes on Burlestone Farm, near Dewlish Old Turnpike Gate. <2>
Abercromby's Type 2 (Pigmy cups) Group 3. <3>
The Old Turnpike Gate was at the Turnpike House, (SY 7809 9642). <4>
It would seem that this incense cup came from a now destroyed barrow in or near the Lord's Down group (SY 79 NE 21). No information regarding this barrow was found during fieldwork. <5>
Information as above. The barrow must have been adjacent to barrows in the Lord's Down group. <6>
