Monument record MDO47781 - Iron Age/Romano-British settlement, Tolpuddle Ball, Tolpuddle

A four-phase Iron Age and Romano-British settlement at Tolpuddle was discovered during survey of the proposed Tolpuddle bypass route in 1993. Phase 1 was an unenclosed Iron Age settlement with 5 or 6 associated inhumations. In phase 2, a sub-rectangular enclosure ditch was dug around the enclosure. In phase 3, the ditch was backfilled and a hut circle built over its line. In phase 4, Roman occupation consisted of four spreads of debris and rectilinear hollows, which may represent buildings. Five inhumations were associated with this final phase.
