Monument record MDO47792 - Barrow in the Lanceborough Group, Winterborne Monkton

A round barrow dug into by J Sydenham a few years prior to 1843. The location of the barrow is unclear, but it may well be one of the so-called Lanceborough Group. Sydenham merely reported that it was a "low barrow, in the common field about one mile and a half south-west from Dorchester. It was constructed of a layer of fine rich mould, covering a nucleus of flints and chalk rubble. In a small circular cist [pit] cut into the native chalk, and covered by a flat stone, was a small urn, containing an interment of burnt bones". Warne and Grinsell located the barrow to Fordington Fields and the describes the pottery vessel as a biconical urn.
