Full Description

A hoard of 7 axes found a "little to the S.W. of EGGARDUN HILL" These axes are looped and ribbed and of squarish section. They have never been used; in each case the cutting edge is unsharpened. Six of the axes are in the D.C.M, the seventh is in BRIDPORT MUSEUM. Acc Nos 0.3.1; 0.3.2; and 1884.1.1-4. <1>

Found in a barrow near EDGGARDUN CAMP in 1882. The ribs are ornamented by ending with small pellets. One is rather different, in the ribs, from the others. Three are remarkable in that they have an extremely high tin content (2)

No information upon this hoard was obtained during field investigation. There is some confusion as to the area in which they were found. The DORSET CO. MUSUEM (T.I) asserts that the hoard was found S.W. of EGGARDUN, while it has been suggested that it was found in a barrow 1/2 mile to the E.S.E of the hillfort. (This occurs in DORSET 39 NW 5 ). Most descriptions confine the site of this L.B.A. merchants hoard merely to 'near EGGARDUN'. (3)

As in T.I, the seventh axe is on shew in BRIDPORT Museum. (4)
