Summary

Well preserved early Roman kiln.The stoke pit was cut to 0.58m below the Roman ground surface with a narrow step 0.15m higher than the base on the northwest side. The back edge was 1.4m from the oven opening, steeply sloped with a concave shape. The firing chamber was a multiphase feature. The earliest phase was 1.3m in length and 1.43m wide and conjoined to the stoke pit, the southeast side had a lining extending into the chamber but the northwest side did not. At a later date the northwest side was lined with red clay and large stones were set against it. The oven was likely demolished and rebuilt twice.
