Summary

Ditch 104 was found in Trench 1 and recorded as >1.13m wide and 0.81m below the Roman ground surface, it was straight and oriented northwest-southeast. Ditch 104 is not accurately datable beyond Roman. Ditches 223, 233, 217 and 243 were uncovered in Trench 2. Ditch 223 ran alongside and partially into the north of the oven chamber of the kiln. It measured 0.54m wide and 0.3 m deep with steep concave sides and a wide flat base. Ditch 233 was heavily impacted by the modern soakaway. 243 was cut into the kiln oven and might have been the terminus of a ditch running alongside 223, it was recorded as 0.36m wide and 0.25m deep with steep flat sides and a wide concave base. Ditch 217 was a tight curvilinear feature with steep flat sides and a wide concave base, measuring 0.35m deep and 0.45m wide. Trench 3 uncovered ditches 303, 305, and 307. Ditch 303 had a sloping, concave-shaped north northeast side with the other side being cut away by ditch 305, ditch 303 was 0.65m deep and 1.2m wide. Ditch 307 was oriented northwest to southeast with a sloping, irregular shaped southwest side and an absent north northeast side due to ditch 305. Ditch 305 was approximately 0.55m deep and 1.3m wide with moderately steep sides and a wide convex base.
