Full Description

Two, possibly three ditched enclosures south of New Coppice to the west of Piddletrenthide are visible as cropmarks on a 1995 aerial photograph, alongside additional linear banked and ditched features and a concentration of pit-type features [1]. The features comprise a rectilinear enclosure 35m by 37m, with a possible entrance at the lower end of its east side. A concentration of pit-type features lies to its southeast, with a few within the enclosure itself and several more outside it to the west, although some might alternatively be later in origin. In the adjacent field to the east of the rectilinear enclosure is a possible sub-oval enclosure 31m by 31m, also with a possible entrance lower on its east side. A third possible curvilinear enclosure is partially visible to the west of the first two, partially visible extending from the south side of New Coppice. This enclosure has a possible entrance on its southeast side. The enclosures and associated pits might be features of later prehistoric origin, potentially Iron Age to Roman in date. Linear ditched and banked features in proximity to the enclosures and in the adjacent field to the south might be field boundaries and/or trackways of contemporary or later date. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle Valleys AIM project.
