Full Description

A linear area of parallel banked lynchets and ridge and furrow cultivation to the north of Cerne Abbas is visible as earthworks on Environment Agency lidar imagery [1]. The features are considered to possibly be medieval strip lynchets and ridge and furrow, possibly part of a medieval strip field system. The areas of ridge and furrow infill between field boundaries present on the OS 1st Edition map, which are probably remnant medieval strip field boundaries still extant at that time [2]. All the field boundaries are now removed from this area. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle Valleys AIM project.
