Full Description
Banked and ditched lynchets and field boundaries along the slopes and the southern part of the summit of Giants Hill, Cerne Abbas, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and on Environment Agency lidar imagery [1, 2]. The features are considered to possibly form part of a field system of potentially Iron Age to Roman date, although it is possible some of the features are field boundaries and lynchets of later, possibly medieval to post medieval date. The features partially enclose and merge with an area of probable Iron Age settlement (MDO712), although it is not clear from aerial sources along how the two element relate or what the chronology of the various features precisely are. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle Valleys AIM project.
