They are considered likely to be extractive pits of medieval or post medieval date and were digitally recorded during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle AIM Project.

A large scatter of over 30 hollows is visible as earthworks on lidar imagery on Puddletown Down to the west of Warren Hill, Puddletown <1>.
