Full Description
A curvilinear ditched enclosure to the north of Charminster, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs [1]. The feature comprises a crescent shaped ditched enclosure around 32m by 30m, potentially truncated on the east side by a modern field boundary. Additional ditched linears include a short curvilinear ditch to the south and more regular straight linears to the northwest forming a T-shape, the shorter leg passing through the enclosure and extending between the eastern and southern modern field boundaries. The enclosure could potentially be a feature of later prehistoric in origin, perhaps of Iron Age to Roman date. The additional ditched linears running across and to the west/northwest of the feature might be associated but could alternatively be later in date, perhaps trackways of post medieval or later origin. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle Valleys AIM project.
