Monument record MDO5114 - Prehistoric field system

Please read our .

Summary

The remains of a later prehistoric enclosed field system, potentially Iron Age or Romano-British in origin, are visible as linear banked earthworks, some forming small irregular rectilinear enclosures, within the extent of Blandford Camp on aerial photographs and on current Environment Agency lidar imagery. Given the complexity of features visible in this area, it is possible that some of the linear boundaries may rather be post-medieval in date, or be associated with the later miltary activity in the area, particularly the wartime use of Blandford Camp. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.

Full Description

The remains of a later prehistoric enclosed field system, potentially Iron Age or Romano-British in origin, are visible as linear banked earthworks, some forming small irregular rectilinear enclosures, within the extent of Blandford Camp on aerial photographs and on current Environment Agency lidar imagery [2-7]. Given the complexity of features visible in this area, it is possible that some of the linear boundaries may rather be post-medieval in date, or be associated with the later miltary activity in the area, particularly the wartime use of Blandford Camp. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.

Some of the features are no longer visible on current APGB and Google Earth imagery.
