Full Description
SY 980957. Round barrow 320.0m. north of Naked Cross - scheduled. (Not listed by Grinsell or RCHM). <1>
(SY 98029584) A round barrow, 2 1/2ft high and 30ft. diameter with signs of a ditch, lies on the end of a spur 350 yds north of Naked Cross. Until 15 years ago it was gorse covered but is now in pasture and is subject to occasional re-ploughing. Visited July 1979. <2>
A Bronze Age barow visible to the north of Naked Cross on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery is thought to be this monument <3-4>. The feature comprises a central mound approximately 9m in diameter with a 0.75m wide outer ditch. It is situated on the end of a low spur of ground as described in the NHRE record (Hob UID 457215). The location of the feature is substantially different to the location given in the NHRE record, being 118m to the north at SY 98017 95831. The Scheduling location also slightly out being 10m to the north.
The current site of the barrow is given in the NHRE record as open pasture. Current Google Earth imagery indicates the site was formerly open pasture, currently enclosed by fencing <5>. The feature was digitally plotted from 1940s aerial photgraphs and current Lidar imagery by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
The monument includes a bowl barrow 350m north of Naked Cross. The mound is ten metres in diameter and about 0.8m high. Surrounding the mound is a quarry ditch from which material was excavated during its construction. This has become infilled over the years but survives as a buried feature two metres wide. <6>
