Monument record MDO5801 - Deserted medieval settlement, Long Crichel

Medieval and later earthworks traces of settlement at Long Crichel, visible as long closes bounded by low banks and scarps, and well-marked building platforms. They occur throughout the present village in the spaces between the extant houses. The settlement is not mentioned in Domesday Book, though it was clearly in existence by the early 14th century. The sites represented by the earthworks are suggested to have been deserted before 1770.

SETTLEMENT REMAINS (969108-979101), consisting of long closes bounded by low banks and scarps, and well-marked building platforms, occur throughout the village in the spaces between the modern houses. The settlement cannot be identified in Domesday, but 27 taxpayers were noted in 1333, and 32 house-holders were listed in 1662. In 1801 the population was 91, indicating some decline during the 18th century. The sites were deserted before c.1770. <1>
