Full Description

Finds from Green Hill in Bridport Museum include the upper stone of a quern, black ware, red Roman ware - two pieces riveted and one with an illegible potters stamp; also the upper part of a human skull. Sited at SY 51258852). <1>

A complete skeleton was found here about 1912. <3>

The pit where these finds were made is disused and grass covered. No surface finds were made during field investigation. <4>

Finds as listed in Authors 1 and 2 are on show in Bridport Museum. There is also a third complete vessel on show labelled "Green Hill", and a large collection of human remains - possibly the skeleton of Author 3. No finds have accession numbers. <5>

Romano-British pottery was recovered from Greenhill in 1892 on a Cornbrash spur. The pottery is now in the Bridport Museum. An inhumation was recorded in 1912. Significantly, 'burials with accompanying food vessels' were found in the quarry on Greenhill towards the end of the nineteenth century. The site is now ploughed out.
Romano-British pottery found, now in Museum of Bridport Literary and Scientific Institute. (The find consists of) two perfect black vessels, fragment of Samian, decorated thin slate of Kimmeridge shale.
SY 512886. "Burials" with "accompanying food vessels" (?) and Durotrigian bowls were found in the quarry on Greenhill towards the end of the 19th century. <9>

’13. GREENHILL, BURTON. SY 512886. On Cornbrash spur projecting north west at 100 m. Noted Boswell Stone 1892 – ‘many fragments black ware and a few pieces of Red Roman’. Durotrigian bowls found during quarrying. Site observed by writer since 1960. Now almost completely ploughed out.’
