Monument record MDO6118 - Round barrow at Scrubbity Barrows, Sixpenny Handley

Please read our .

Summary

A possible bowl barrow in Scrubbity Coppice, one of a group excavated by Pitt Rivers in 1882-83. This barrow was excavated on January 25th 1883. Before excavation it was visible as an oval mound 20 feet by 16 feet across, comprised entirely of earth and flints. 28 flint flakes and 1 retouched flake were the only finds. Pitt Rivers suggested that the site may in fact have been a spoil heap associated with the unrecorded excavations on the adjacent barrow.

Full Description

Trust for Wessex Archaeology, 1986, Dorset Barrow Survey, Papworth, M D J 3 January 1986 (Index). SDO134.

'Visible as a faint swelling and has the appearance of other barrows in this group (eg. Sixpenny Handley 48, 45 and 47). It lies in deciduous woodland several metres north of a track aligned ENE-WSW. Lies immedieately SW of the ditch of Sixpenny Handley 46. Grainsell and RCHME consider it a spoil heap from the excavation of Sixpenning Handley 46. The otherwise clear ditch of 46 is infilled NE of this barrow.'
