Monument record MDO6253 - Pit, Grammar School Lane, Wimborne Minster

Please read our .

Summary

Four pits were recorded during development of the site for domestic housing. The largest pit, in the centre of the site, was some four metres in diameter. Its fill deposit consisted of a fine black soil with oyster shell, bone and charcoal, and one piece of late medieval roof tile, all sealed by a layer of dirty gravel, possibly representing upcast from an adjacent pit. Two other smaller pits had similar fillings.

Full Description

Early medieval features were recorded in an adjacent area to the west, but not on this site. This lack of evidence for medieval structures on the site would tend to indicate that the area was in a 'backland' location, well behind prinicipal street frontages. No ditched boundaries were identified to enable any conclusions to be drawn about the relationship of this area to the developed town plan.

The final phase of building work on the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School site, Wimborne, was begun in May 1985. The area lies on the east side of Grammar School lane approximately 50m to the south of the Minster, within the proposed monastic circuit. The site was bordered on the south by the passage from Deans Court to the Minster beyond which is the Old Grammar School.
