Monument record MDO6382 - Lynchet, Wimborne St Giles

Summary

South eastern end of a positive lynchet characterised by the presence of a mound at either end. Note that MDO44635 represents the north western half of the lynchet with its own associated mound. Presumably part of a field system. Was recorded by Grinsell in his gazetteer of bowl barrows but described by him as "apparently one end of a positive lynchet". Both "mounds" had previously been marked on Ordnance Survey maps as "tumuli".

Full Description

A mound listed by Grinsell in his gazetteer of bowl barrows (as Wimborne St Giles 42b) but suggested by him to "apparently" represent one end of a positive lynchet, presumably part of field system SU 01 NW 80. Another similar mound, suggested by Grinsell to represent the other end of the same lynchet, is recorded as SU 01 NW 63 <1>. [Note: see MDO44635].

NB this mound/lynchet was originally recorded as part of SU 01 NW 63.
