Full Description

Earthwork remains of Iron Age and Romano-British field system overlain by Medieval strip lynchets. Visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs {1,2}. The site was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.

Strip lynchets of up and down type covered 12 acres partly over "Celtic" fields about SY 656856 and a further 12 acres at SY 657854, now almost destroyed. <3>

Two or three genlee contour scarps are visible in the field centred at SY 656855; they may be much ploughed down lynchets. No "up and down" lychets are now visible, there or at SY 657854. <4>

‘(394) STRIP LYNCHETS, formerly in Upwey parish, remain in three areas. … (c) Strip lynchets of up-and-down type covered 12 acres partly over ‘Celtic’ fields about 656856, and a further 12 acres at 657854 are almost destroyed; three groups lie S. of (b), W. and E. of South Field on the Tithe Map.’
