Full Description

The largest and most perfect example of a Roman-type mill yet discovered in Great Britain was found at Ham near Poole, near the bridge on the site of the Pottery, and is now in the British Museum. Each of the stones is one foot in height, and the grinding edge 2 feet in diameter, the whole weighing nearly 3 cwt. It was driven by bars inserted through lugs on its sides, between which is an aperture for inserting a bar to lift off the top stone when necessary. <1>

Sited by H P Smith Esq., F.S.A. to SZ 00319038. Site was built over. <2>
