Pit 710. The pit was oval, 1.4 m long, 0.88 m wide and 0.33 m deep, with steeply sloping sides and a flat base. The primary fill (708) was of charcoal interleaved with lenses of fired clay and burnt flint; there was no burning of the underlying natural to show that the deposit was burnt in situ. Romano-British pottery was also recovered from the primary fill. Twenty out of 21 of these sherds came from a single vessel. An overlying layer of mottled but predominantly pale yellow clay (707) was surmounted by lightly charcoal-flecked greyish brown loam (706).
