Summary

The base of a 15th-century stone churchyard cross, consisting of a square sloped back to an octagon, with a square socket. There is no shaft and the base is not in its original location.

Full Description

The base or socket-stone of a late 14th century churchyard cross was discovered a few years since when an old wall of Lytchett Minster churchyard was demolished. It may now be seen in the churchyard at the west end of church, near the tower. <1>

The socket-stone of the cross is now resting on the stone wall by the tower of Lytchett Minster church at SY 96029309. <2>

This socket stone has been moved recently, and placed on its edge at SY 96069309, which is 4.0m west of the position photographed and reported by <2> The base of the stone is 0.7m square, with broaches at the top corners leaving a shallow octagonal collar around the socket. In good condition and conforming to the 14th or 15th century type churchyard cross socket-stone. <3>
