Full Description
A decorated Late Bronze Age bucket-shaped urn found during gravel extraction in 1969, was buried upright in a small pit dug into the bedrock and covered with six inches of soil. The pit was near the highest point locally and no trace of a barrow was noticed in the exposed face of the quarry, though the top of the rise is gorse covered and may conceal a small barrow. Just to the south-west of the find-spot (at about SY 875803), is a disused Army strong point. The urn is not of the ordinary Dorset Deverel-Rimbury tradition, but shows pronounced Cornish affinities (see illustration), and is only the third to be found in Dorset. The cremated remains comprised mainly of small bone slivers, also some small teeth, possibly a child's milk teeth. The urn is in Dorset County Museum. <1>
