Summary

Cross in churchyard of St Martin's Church, Cheselbourne. Lower part of a fifteenth century shaft with moulded angles, set diagonally on a rectangular pedistal with hollow-chamfered plinth; , below, two steps with hollow chamfering.

Full Description

In Cheselbourne churchyard is a preaching cross of circa 14th century date. "It consists of a calvary of two deep steps and the remains of a tapering square shaft, set diagonally in a square socket-stone. The remains of the shaft, 13 ins square at the base, are 4ft 3ins high. The socket-stone is 3ft square and 16 ins deep.

The upper parts of the steps of the calvary are flanged outwards and they have been restored to some extent with modern cement. The calvary is square with sides of 2.2 m maximum. Overall height 1.4m. The socket stone with sides of 0.9m and height of 0.3m has also been restored with cement. The shaft is 1.2m high with sides of 0.3m and has carved or perhaps weathered fluted corners.
