Summary

A mound situated on a slight knoll, and identified as a probable bowl barrow. The mound is composed of earth, sand and turf, with maximum dimensions of 12m in diameter and around 0.5m in height. A quarry ditch surrounds the mound and survives as a buried feature.

Full Description

A mound composed mainly of sand with some small flints and pieces of ferruginous sandstone. The diameter is 10.0 metres and height 0.4 metres. There is no sign of a berm or ditch. No surface finds were made although the mound is mutilated by many rabbit holes, and it would seem that Authority 2 is correct. The mound is sparsely covered with heather. <2>

Insufficient information to classify this mound as natural; it has a similar surface appearances to other adjacent tumuli. <4>

SY 80278623. Mound, possible barrow, 48ft. diameter and 4ft high situated on the end of a slight knoll. <6>

SY 802865 - SY 803863. Round barrows west of Blacknoll Hill. Scheduled. <7>

SY 80258622; 11.0 metres in diameter and 0.4 metres high. It is situated at the end of a narrow low knoll with a slight saddle between the barrow and the knoll, which might be the result of surface scraping to construct the barrow. See ground photograph. Revised at 1:2500. <8>

‘Most of the seventeen barrows lie on heathland N. of the village, five forming the Black Knoll Group (AC). Another barrow possibly existed at 81938295 (O.S. 1811). Some on Winfrith Down, perhaps including (32), were excavated by Durden but cannot now be identified (Durden Catalogue, 9, no. 110; 21, nos. 50-54). … (40) Mound, possible barrow (SY 88 NW; 80278623) on end of slight knoll.
