Full Description

Observations and recording by J Beavis and D Young during earth moving for re-alignment of the A352 Wareham to Dorchester road at Newburgh Bends, where it was thought that works might impinge upon the deserted medieval village of West Burton.

No remains of buildings, trackways or occupational debris were found that could be associated directly with the medieval settlement. In one area a deposit of charred brushwood, sherds of glazed post-medieval pottery, several iron nails and a bronze nail were seen approximately 18 inches below the modern ground level. The pottery included two rim sherds from bowls about 14 inches in diameter, one decorated with an incised wavy line, and several sherds of slip-decorated wares of Donyatt type.
