Summary

Bronze Age round barrow excavated by Druitt in 1925 and found to have been previously opened. Only a few sherds of pottery were recovered. The barrow has been destroyed by housing development at Bishop's Close.

Full Description

Thistle Barrow was trenched by Herbert Druitt in 1925 and ws found to have been previously opened. A few Bronze Age sherds and one fragment of rusticated ware were recovered. (1)

In 1969, this barrow was described as a "badly mutilated and overgrown mound 19.0 m in diameter with a max height of 1.5 m, it has a central 'saucer' depression, probably caused by early-excavation, measuring 9.0 m in diameter and having a max depth of 0.5 m. There has also been slight digging on the NW side. No sign of berm or ditch." (1)

A badly mutilated and overgrown mound 19.0 m in diameter with a max height of 1.5 m, it has a central 'saucer' depression, probably caused by early-excavation, measuring 9.0 m in diameter and having a max depth of 0.5 m. There has also been slight digging on the NW side. No sign of berm or ditch. <5>

The SW half of Thistle Barrow, a bowl barrow, has been removed. The extant portion, 20.0 m by 9.0 m, and 1.5 m in height, is in poor condition. Published 1:1250 survey correct. <6>
