Full Description

Name SZ 080 931: 3 Beakers found in 1931. <1>

Three beakers were found by Messrs Grounds and Newton, contractors, while making the upper end of Glenflowers Avenue, Bournemouth in 1931. They were found close together and each beaker was in a small pocket about 2 feet to 2 feet and 6 inches deep, and none was more than 1 foot wide and so could never have contained an internment. It appears that a single beaker was buried in each hole as all the sherds belonged to one vessel. A trial excavation revealed a small area 4 or 5 yards away containing a few reddish-burnt flints and a fragment of charcoal, about 18 inches below the surface. A trench running the length of the road was examined for evidence of a barrow ditch, but none was found and the ground surface was entirely flat. Numerous early Bronze Age implements including blades, scrapers, seven "tranchet" arrowheads and a flake with a ground edge were also found within 100 yards of the beakers in Talbot Wood. Finds in the Calkin and Mangen Collections, British Museum and in the Russell Cotes Museum, Bournemouth. <2-3>

Three Beakers were found close together in small pits during the construction of Glenferness Avenue, Bournemouth in 1931. The pits measured about 0.3m across and 0.6-0.75m deep and appeared to contain a single complete vessel. Observation of a trench running the length of the road revealed no sign of a barrow ditch and a trial excavation revealed an area of burning about 3.5-4.5m away. No human bone was recovered suggesting it was not a burial site, so may have been part of a settlement. <5>
