Monument record MDO8671 - Bronze Age urned cremation burial behind Christchurch Station

A Bronze Age pottery vessel containing calcined bone was found, according to its label, behind Christchurch Station in 1886. It is now in Birmingham Museum, having been presented to the museum by a man who bought it in an antique shop in Swanage.

(SZ 15269322) Bought many years ago in a Swanage antique shop. As purchased it was labelled as being from behind Christchurch Station. Presented by the purchaser - not a local person - to Birmingham City Museum. (2)

The urn, of plain coarse pottery without decoration, is 10 3/4 ins high and 8 3/4 ins broad at the top, with a lip one inch in depth. When discovered, it was nearly full of calcined bone. At Birmingham Nat Hist. Museum. (3)
