Monument record MDO868 - Prehistoric settlement south east of New Barn, Cheselbourne

Two prehistoric enclosures visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The probable site of a prehistoric settlement is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and was digitally recorded during the Dorset Upper Cerne and Piddle AIM Project. The features include several curvilinear and rectilinear enclosures and an associated pit scatter.

(SY 754994). An enclosure probably associated with neighbouring 'Celtic' fields is visible on air photographs to the south-east of New Barn, Cheselbourne. <1>

Nothing visible on the ground. <2>

A rapid examination of air photography shows this as a complex of irregular/curvilinear enclosures formed of two larger enclosures extending east-west, with the eastern attached to the western. Within the eastern is a smaller, irregular enclosure. East of these enclosures, just outside the eastern enclosure are possibly one or two more small enclosures. All the features are visible as cropmarks. <3>

The features include several curvilinear and rectilinear enclosures including four possible round houses and an associated pit scatter. <3.1, 5> The features cover an area of approximately 5 hectares.
