Full Description

D J Markell excavated a trial trench close to the mill stream, Christchurch, during 1973. This excavation was subsequently published as a short note in DNHAS monograph 5 (Jarvis 1983).

The excavation revealed, beneath the topsoil, evidence for a medieval structure [S8]. This was L-shaped, 3.0m long with two courses of unbonded stone. The stones used were Purbeck limestone and flint. There was no indication of a floor level. The structure is likely to date from the 13th-15th century and may form part of a mill complex on an adjacent property.

A subsequent excavation by K Jarvis for Poole Museums in 1976 (site X12), adjacent to and contiguous with the trial trench, showed that the structure continued to the south west as a limestone scatter.
