Full Description
K. Jarvis directed excavations in the tenement strip at the rear of the High Street frontage, Staggs site (X12) Christchurch, during 1976. The results were subsequently published as a short note in DNHAS monograph 5 (Jarvis 1983).
The excavations revealed evidence for a two phase structure [S7] in the NE area of the site. This structure was mainly outside the excavation area and formed by post trench [409] and an alignment of trenches [401, 429, 452 & 423] in the first phase. In the second phase the wall in post trench [423] was replaced and then sealed by floor [200] and the wall was replaced by posts [436 & 454]. The floor [200] consisted of a diffuse spread of patches of loam, gravel and clay. Two superimposed hearths were contemporary with the floor.
A single sherd from [409] suggests a 15th-16th century date for [S7].
This structure may have been located, along with three other structures [S4-6], within a medieval plot at the NE end of the site, separated from the rest of the site by ditch [54, 73] during the 13th-14th century.
