Full Description

East and West Tatton were anciently manors, but now consist of several small farms. In the Domesday Book, they are surveyed in two parcels and called Tatetun and Tatentone. Tatton lies partly in Portesham and partly in Buckland Ripers. <1>

(SY 634827). Settlement remains lie over a small area immediately east of Tatton Farm, formerly in Buckland Ripers parish, where
vistiges of two closes abut onto a ditch or hollow-way. 'Tatetun' is recorded in the Domesday Book. <2>

East Tatton and West Tatton; these lie about a mile south of Shilvinghampton (SY 68 SW 1). Settlement remains have been reported
close to what is now Tatton Farm. There are no settlement remains in an appropriate position and West Tatton may be a truly 'lost village'. <3>

Tatton Farm at SY 633827, is some 300.0m east of the Portesham boundary and at one time may have extended over it; West Tatton as
shown on OS 1", could well apply, and East Tatton applied to the present Middle Farm at SY 647826. However, these names could be post-Medieval and have no bearing of the sites of the DMV's. <4>

In the field centered SY 634827 there a a few scarps, a bank and a hollow way or ditch, all recognisable but not prominent (maximum
height 0.7m). The hollow way or wide ditch runs for 100.0m N-S and from it three scarps run off to the west. S-E of this a bank 50.0m
long runs E-W and turns at right angles south for 50.0m as a scarp at its east end. Remains of two possible platforms are visible. In this field a few other scarps and undulations, vague and unsurveyable, are visible. Surveyed at 1:2500 on permatrace. <5>

Extensive medieval settlement remains lie to the north, east and south of the modern settlment of Tatton Farm. The bank and ditched features comprise enclosures, terraced platforms and a possible hollow way. These features were digitally plotted from aerial photographs <6-7> during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.

'(32) SETTLEMENT REMAINS (634827) lie over a small area immediately E. of Tatton Farm (Monument 29), formerly in Buckland Ripers parish. Vestiges of two closes abut on a ditch or hollow-way. 'Tatetun' occurs in Domesday Book. (Hutchins II, 491; Fägersten, 158; R.A.F. V.A.P. CPE/UK 1821: 6456.)'
