Summary

The remains of a medieval strip field system are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and lidar imagery on the west side of Quarry Hill. They form part of a wider system of lynchets that surround the hill and are described in records MDO38337-9. The features were digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.

Full Description

Centred at SY 43189342. A field system of Md. strip lynchets following the lower contours on the W side of Quarry Hill. The lynchets are mainly under rough pasture, average 12.0m. wide and 0.5m.high. They are clearly visible on Aps CPE/UK/2431/3170-1. <1>

A rapid examination of air photography suggests the presence of strip lynchets further south, on the west side of Quarry Hill, visible as earthworks. <2>

Fragments of ten lynchets are visible running roughly north-south for 200m. The features were digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP, they form part of a wider system of lynchets that surround the hill and are described in records MDO38337-9. <3-4>
