Monument record MDO902 - Roman road from Dorchester to Axminster

Please read our .

Summary

A Post Office cable trench excavated in the late 1940s across the main road at Chideok, between the Church and the road to Seaton, revealed a section across a cambered road surface of rammed flints at a depth of three to four feet below modern ground level. Another exposure in a drain trench in 1951 showed the cambered Roman metalling to be at least 10 feet wide and at least one and a half feet deep, composed of rammed flints (?Greensand Chert) and beach pebbles.
