Listed Building record MDO9456 - St Aldhelm's Chapel, Boveridge, Cranborne

Church built in 1838. Banded brick and flint with stone dressings, and slate-covered roofs. The Chuch consists of a combined nave and chancel, with a north chapel and a small north-west tower, all in simple classical style.

Saint Aldhelm's Chapel has walls of banded brick and flint with stone dressings, and slate-covered roofs. A chapel at Boveridge is mentioned in 1595, (see SU 01 SE 2) but the present building dates from 1838 and consists of a combined nave and chancel, with a north chapel and a small north-west tower, all in simple classical style.

Panelling by the altar, with linenfold and arabesques, is 16th/17th century, and a carved stone cartouche is dated 1708. Graphical material omitted. <2-3>

'(2) St. Aldhelm's Chapel, Boveridge (06161465), I mile N. of (1), has walls of banded brick and flint with stone dressings, and slate-covered roofs. A chapel at 'Boridge in Cranborne' is mentioned in a will of 1595 (S.D.N.Q., X (1907), 165). The present building, however, is of 1838 and consists of a Chancel and Nave combined, with a N. Chapel and a small N.W. Tower, all in simple classical style. The windows are round-headed. A stone bell-cote on the tower has four RomanDoric columns supporting a canopy with a vase finial.'
