Summary

A Bronze Age bowl barrow, one of two mounds shown on the 1811 Ordnance Survey map. The site is visible as a low earthwork mound on lidar imagery and was digitally recorded during the Dorset Upper Cern and Piddle AIM Project.

Full Description

SY 76799859. A truncated bowl barrow. Diameter 13 paces, height 2ft. <1>

SY 76799861. A grass covered bowl barrow with a scatter of exposed flints and a flat top with slightly sunken centre. Diameter 17.0m, height 0.5m taken to the west. <2>

Barrow? (76799859), near the summit of Whitelands Down (S) on a gentle N slope, has been heavily ploughed and is now an irregular mound, apparently dug away on the E side; two mounds are shown at this point on the 1811 OS map; diam about 50ft ht 2ft. <5>

SY 76799861. Ploughed down bowl barrow in pasture. Diameter 16.0m., height 0.5m. No visible ditch. Re-surveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. There is no visible evidence of a second barrow in the vicinity. <6>

The site is visible as a low earthwork mound on lidar imagery <8> and was digitally recorded during the Dorset Upper Cern and Piddle AIM Project. Traces of an external ditch are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs on the western side <9>.
