Please read our .

Summary

2 Roman coins (1st -3rd century BC) - possibly Iron Age imports, but perhaps more plausibly post-conquest losses in the first or early second century AD, when republican denarii still formed a substantial proportion of the Roman silver in circulating in Britain.

Full Description

A worn coin of P. Aelius Paetus (c.291 BC) from the cliff at Burton Bradstock where the new villas are situate in Bridport Museum. Also a coin of L. Pomponius Molo (c.94 BC) apparently from the same site. [Burton Villas centred at SY 48998890] <1>

[This same Pomponius shows on the reverse of some of his coins the Gaulish king Bituitus in a Biga, which suggests that these coins may have been Iron Age imports.] <2>

[Area centred at SY 489888] No further information was obtained during field investigation of the area, and no occupation debris was seen in the cliff top soil. Not listed under Republican coinage held by BRIDPORT Museum. Enquiries revealed no knowledge of the coins or their present location. <3>
