Full Description

Christchurch is listed as a Vill in the Lay Subsidy Roll of 1327-28. <2>

Anglo-Saxon name of Tweoxnean or Twynham meaning the place between two streams, listed in the late 9th or early 10th century Burghal Hidage. Probably the centre for a Minster church from at least the early 8th century. Earliest street pattern most likely a Saxon cross roads with the High Street forming the north-south axis along the gravel promontory and Wick Lane and Castle Street forming the cross axis. Enclosing bank and ditch defences. <6>
