Maritime record MWX1620 - Victory

The wreck of a British Privateer which was reported as stranded on the 1st of December 1666 at Portland beach, as a result of stormy weather conditions. The Captain, Lucy, drowned with nine of his crew. Constructed of wood, she belonged to the Duke of Richmond and had an armament of 10 guns. She was a sailing vessel.

01-DEC-1666 (Weymouth) John Peacock to Williamson: Several vessels have been wrecked on Portland beach, especially the VICTORY, the Duke of Richmond's privateer of 10 guns, under Capt. Lucy, who was drowned with nine of his company. The storm began on Tuesday, wind SW, and was very violent; the persons drowned would have been saved had they kept to their vessels. The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
