Full Description

`Part of the cargo...has been saved in good condition; this morning the vessel had sixteen and a half feet of water in her at high tide. (5) `Stranded near the old castle and wrecked, the remains being auctioned by Mr Pothecary and bought by P Dodson. There was a problem of the cargo polluting the sea. (1)(6) `...with oats, took the ground near Portland Bridge; her fore- and main-masts have been cut away, has a quantity of water in her hold; arrangements are being made for getting her off, and towing her into this harbour. (2) `The HEBRIDES, Lake, of and for London, from Odessa, was driven ashore last night, east side of Portland Beach (not as before reported);...she makes a great deal of water, but is expected to be got off when the weather moderates: crew saved. [Mem: another account states that the cargo (oats) of the above vessel was destroyed.] (3) Sources (1) and (6) give the voyage as from London to the Crimea, and the date of loss as 25-MAR-1857.
