'Weymouth Auction Records (Courtesy Margaret Morris, Weymouth Museum) “Mr. Pothecary announced to ‘Factors, Ship Owners and others the sale on West Bay Beach, opposite Fleet Coast Guard Station, the Sale of the Stranded French Ship Cinq Saeures of about 170 tons burthen. The sale to begin at 1o’clock in the afternoon precisely, in Lots, beginning with the cargo: 800 Quarters or Rye in very good condition, then the Hull of the Brig as she now lies stranded on the beach with her Masts, Sails, Spars, Standing and Running Rigging, Anchors, Chains, Warps, cables, all of the Ship’s sails and the Whole of her stores and Effects” The announcement continued; “The Ship was substantially built of Oak about 5 years since, and probably if the weather permits, may be launched and made a valuable Vessel, her constructions and timbers being good. The Rye is but partially damaged and of a very good sample. A punctual attendance is requested and Purchasers will find the easiest route to the sale through West Fleet Farm Lane. For further particulars apply to Mos. A. Aubin Desfougerais, Vice Consul for France or Auctioneer. NOTE: The sale must have been successful , as in April, the Southern Times added this small foot note: “The Cinq Saeures – This vessel which was lately cast on shore on Portland Beach and recently purchased as a wreck by Messrs. R. Damen and Swatridge, was successfully launched on Tuesday last by Mr. Besant, shipbuilder, and towed by the Contractor Steamer into Weymouth Harbour where she will undergo the process of refitting. As she appears to have sustained little damage and is nearly a new vessel a thorough overhaul will render her good and seaworthy. A happy ending for a shipwreck which somehow escaped the customary pillaging! And thanks to Mr. Pothecary for conducting a successful auction”.'
