Monument record MWX2851 - Shell Midden, The Jolly Sailor, The Quay, Poole

A deposit of oyster shell was found beneath the Jolly Sailor Inn, The Quay, Poole. It probably is part of the post-medieval 'Oyster Bank' shell midden.

A deposit of closely-packed oyster shells was observed beneath the Jolly Sailor Inn during alterations to the building in 1996. This deposit measured 0.8m thick to the north but the full thickness was not determined further south. It lay between 0.5-0.7m below the floor level. It contained a number of post-medieval pot sherds and some brick fragments. (1)

This midden deposit is most likely part of the post-medieval 'Oyster Bank' shown on 18th century maps of the town. (2)(3)
