<1> Papworth, M, 1992, Brownsea Island, Dorset. Wessex region, 112, 088 (Unpublished document). SWX1390.
The Large Pottery as shown on the 1873 consisted of clay pits, a water resovoir, brick and clay sheds, 7 pipe kilns, a clay crushing and pottery crushing mill and in the engine house in which there was a 13 horse power beam engine, a 16 horse power horizontal steam engine and also a steam brick making machine (DCRO D263/T4). The pottery was in production from the 1850s until 1887. The buildings had been levelled by 1901 but many details survive concerning the types of buildings and their contents in 1859 (DCRO photocopy 167) and 1873 (DCRO D263/T4). The main building was a brick built and slated manufactury 90m long and 30m wide and three floors high. Remains of building foundations are still tracable on the ground in an area of grass used for scout camps. There are remains of wooden piles for a jetty at SZ01258748. Clay pit excavations are clear cut into the hillside to the north. A tramway (112553) linked this site with the other terminal at Seymours brickyard (112087). Visited 25/2/1992.
