The area south of Caroline Cliff called Barnes Bottom is shown as a brickworks on Isaac Taylor’s map of 1770 (DCRO photocopy 1/1), three buildings are shown as a central larger rectangle flanked by two squares. This arrangement is identical on the 1853 map (DCRO D263/T1) but here are called lime kilns. The 1859 (DCRO photocopy 167) sales particulars show a different arrangement of buildings and here they are called Barnes brickyard and two kilns for burning 28,000 bricks each and an open brick shed 60m long are recorded. The 1873 map (DCRO D263/T4) shows one building. The 1901 O.S. shows a lime kiln here but this building had been demolished by 1925 O. S. Brick, tile and coal black sediments erode from low cliffs between SZ022874 – 020875. A brick wall is eroding from the cliff at SZ02028750. Four pits containing clay and brick waste are clear in section at SZ02058748 and average 0.8 wide and 0.8 deep. A building eroding from a low cliff at SZ02208742 is probably the remains of the kiln shown on the 1873 map. It appears to include two building phases and may incorporate an earlier structure. The kiln is 14m long and the width exposed on the beach was 4m in 1988 and 5m in 1992. In 1988 an iron box set into the clay floor was exposed but this was not visible in 1992. To the north the brickworks continues into the low cliff and a brick arched tunnel 0.8m wide can be seen in the cliff face. Immediately to the south of this brick building the wooden piles representing the remains of a jetty can be seen. Visited 25/2/1992 when a plan was drawn of the site at 1:50
