Full Description
Field system on Brownsea Island, laid out after 1765 by Humphrey Sturt. (1)
<1> Papworth, M, 1992, Brownsea Island, Dorset. Wessex region, 112,555 (Unpublished document). SWX1390.
A field system which was laid out after 1765 by Humphrey Sturt is shown on Taylor’s map of 1770 (DCRO photocopy 1/1) when a group of fields lay along the course of the stream on the north side of the Island and a second group lay south-west of Brownsea Castle. The field system remained largely unchanged until 1853 (D263/1). At that time the fields were used for pasture. After 1853 Colonel Waugh converted the south fields into a deer park and the fields SE of the lakes into a kitchen garden with hot houses, the field SE of this is recorded as a poultry paddock and two arable fields are recorded in 1859 (DCRO photocopy 167). Another field was enclosed on the north side of the lakes in the late 19th century. The enclosure banks for this field system are still visible but the land is no longer farmed. Cultivation ridges are visible at SZ026875. Visited 2/3/1988 and 25/2/1992.
