In 1989 a BP pipeline crossed Corfe River 350m north of South Middlebere House. Archaeologists working for the Trust for Wessex Archaeology in advance of the pipeline, excavated prehistoric settlement activity on both sides of the Corfe River. On the east side of the river, outside the Estate, artefacts dating from the Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age were found. In the Iron Age the area supported an extensive industrial and agricultural settlement. Within the Corfe Castle Estate on the west bank of the river a Middle-Late Iron Age industrial site was excavated (fig 10). Evidence for shale-working, iron-working, pottery production and salt production were excavated (Cox and Hearne 1991, 65)
