Full Description

Earlier road surface noted in drainage trench. Revealed over 2.5m and 600mm below the present carriageway surface, consisted of rounded Lias stone cobbles set vertically into a dark grey gritty clay, no finds recovered. Directly overlain by modern hardcore. Unlikely to be a portion of Roman Road recorded previously in the village as this was composed of rammed smaller flints and had flat stones laid on top of the camber. Surface is more characteristic of roads constructed during the 19th century (1)
