Full Description

Observations made of Roman material eroding out of the cliff at Bowleaze Cove between 1945 and 1949 noted that the occupation debris observed appeared to concentrate in three v-shaped depressions which were joined by a dark occupation layer. These features may be rubbish ditches belonging to a dwelling. The occupation layer and ditches contained Romano-British pottery described as having a strong native cast (Iron Age B and C). The pottery included cooking pots with beaded or flanged rims, platters and New Forest ware. One pot recovered had a repair in the form of a lead plug. Other material included limestone slabs possibly for paving, a fragment of roof tile, nails and shells. (1)
